Will the Cabinet Secretary implement targets and timelines for improved educational outcomes for pupils in Wales?
I have outlined my key priorities to drive sustained improvements in educational standards in Wales. These include improving attendance at school and the importance of literacy and numeracy as the fundamentals of learning. We know there is a strong link between school attendance and attainment, and we must ensure that learners are in school with high quality and experienced teachers. My recent Oral Statements on Education Standards and on Attendance have set out what we will do to improve.
The education sector has asked for clear and focused set of priorities, which is what I have provided, and which will help them manage workload, prioritise resources and focus on what matters. Setting clear priorities is more important than narrowly focussed numerical targets which can skew learning and drive unhelpful behaviours. I am focussed on supporting learners and schools to achieve the very best and we are committed to working collaboratively and openly across the system to improve education standards across Wales.
