What consideration has the Cabinet Minister given to devolving more responsibilities to local authorities, and if so, what powers have been considered?

Answered by Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning | Answered on 24/07/2026

The Welsh Government is committed to ensuring our local authorities are in the strongest position possible to provide the services on which we all depend.

We will continue to work with local government and regional partners through our wider public service reform agenda to ensure functions are exercised at the most appropriate level and that governance arrangements remain under review. This will include work through the Strategic Partnership Agreement.

While there is no specific package of additional powers for transfer to local authorities at this time, we will continue to consider opportunities to strengthen local decision-making as part of wider local government and regional governance improvements.
