What consideration has the Cabinet Minister given to widening the scope of Welsh degree apprenticeships to include professions such as nursing?
The Welsh Government recognises the potential role that degree apprenticeships could play in supporting the wider workforce, including healthcare professions such as nursing.
There is already some provision in Wales, with nursing apprenticeships delivered on a localised basis by individual health boards. We also support work-based progression into professional roles in sectors such as social care through established, “grow your own” approaches.
Officials have begun discussions with Medr to explore the viability of expanding healthcare-related apprenticeships, including at degree level.
More broadly, the Welsh Government is strengthening the skills system through a National Skills Audit and a Future Skills Summit, which will help inform future priorities and ensure the system is aligned to employer and workforce needs.
Any decisions on widening the scope of Welsh degree apprenticeships will be informed by evidence and engagement with partners across relevant sectors.
