What discussions have taken place between the Welsh Government and local health boards regarding future investment in facilities, infrastructure, staffing capacity, and patient services at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr Hospital?

Answered by Cabinet Minister for Health and Care | Answered on 11/06/2026

Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr is one of the key hospital sites delivering healthcare services across the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area.  The most recent capital scheme on the site has been the Breast Care Unit which opened in February 2024 following an £11m investment.

In addition to the Breast Care Unit, the Health Board received £0.750m of Welsh Government funding for a lift upgrade and improvements to the chillers at the site across 2025-26 and 2026-27.

Welsh Government officials continue to have bi-monthly meetings with Health Board staff where on-going and proposed capital schemes across the whole estate are discussed.  Any capital proposals put forward to the Welsh Government for funding support would need to include the associated staffing impacts. Any further investment in the NHS estate must be considered within the context of the substantial maintenance backlog inherited from the previous Government. Ensuring that this is addressed in a timely and strategic manner is a key priority of the new Welsh Government.
