Will the Cabinet Secretary liaise with telecommunication providers to establish how mobile signal can be improved in Creigiau?
Telecommunications is not a devolved matter and responsibility for improving mobile phone connectivity in Pentyrch and Creigiau rests with the UK Government. However, through the Digital Strategy for Wales we are using the powers available to us to create the right conditions for improving mobile coverage.
We have already taken actions through our Mobile Action Plan for Wales and digital infrastructure barrier busting taskforce, including making changes to planning legislation, updating the code of best practice on mobile phone network development, identifying digital champions in many local authorities to work with the industry to resolve barriers to deployment, and engaged with Ofcom over mobile phone spectrum usage.
Officials engage with the mobile industry and the UK Government on the Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme and have established a joint working group to support the delivery of the programme in Wales. Through the SRN programme the Mobile Network Operators committed to improving coverage across Wales. Geographical 4G coverage from all four mobile networks is currently at 99% in the Cardiff local authority area and 77% for Wales.
Officials also engage regularly with Ofcom including to advocate for regulation that is appropriate for Wales. We are continuing to make the case for ongoing investment in digital infrastructure throughout Wales. This includes encouraging private sector operators to expand their own mobile networks. I have met with mobile network operators and have stressed the importance of extending 5G and 4G coverage to all parts of Wales.
