What representations has the Welsh Government made to the UK Government about reducing VAT on oil, which is a common form of fuel used in areas of rural Wales?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language | Answered on 27/03/2026

VAT is a reserved tax. The Welsh Government has not made direct representations to the UK government specifically in respect of reducing VAT on oil, although we continue to make representations on a wide range of subjects to support the interests of the people of Wales, including in respect of the cost of living, delivery of public services and economic growth.

At a meeting of UK Finance Ministers at the Finance Interministerial Standing Committee on 19 March, we discussed the economic outlook, with particular attention to the impacts of the Iran conflict and pressures on energy and agriculture.

The Welsh Government announced additional support for households facing rising heating oil costs on 18 March. This includes increasing the level of support available through the Discretionary Assistance Fund (DAF).  Extra help with heating oil to deal with rising costs | GOV.WALES
