Will the Cabinet Secretary confirm how many meetings have taken place between Newport City Council and the Welsh Government in the last 2 years about the required replacement bridge at Forge Mews?
The Welsh Government remains committed to working with Newport City Council to find a solution for the residents of Forge Mews in Newport and has been in ongoing contact with Newport City Council regarding the situation at Forge Mews. It is the council’s responsibility to maintain and replace local infrastructure of this nature.
In 2025-26, the Welsh Government provided £1 million to Newport City Council for continuation of design and survey work for a replacement bridge at Forge Mews. Through the Regional Transport Fund, Welsh Government supports the regions and local authorities to deliver their Regional Transport Plans. Local authorities, working with the CJCs, are responsible for prioritising transport schemes in line with local needs and statutory duties.
My officials are in frequent contact with Newport City Council and use these opportunities to discuss the Forge Mews bridge and associated access matters. The Welsh Government will continue to work constructively with Newport City Council as it considers options for addressing access and connectivity issues in the area.
