What progress has been made by the Gynaecology Clinical Implementation Network in embedding the Women’s Health Plan for Wales recommendations on improving education, training, and clinical recognition of endometriosis and adenomyosis across NHS Wales?

The following improvements to education and training about endometriosis and adenomyosis have been made:

  • We have funded the Endometriosis Cymru website, which includes resources, information, support and a symptom tracker tool.
  • Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has run an expert-led GP training webinar on endometriosis to support earlier symptom recognition.
  • HEIW is developing additional endometriosis training modules, available to all NHS staff viaY Dysgu. The introductory module is already available and the Fundamentals in Endometriosis module will be available by the end of March.
  • In December, learning materials for school nurses to use in secondary schools were launched to support awareness, understanding and management of women’s health, including endometriosis.

The National Strategic Clinical Network for Women’s Health is responsible for delivering the Women’s Health Plan.

To further develop endometriosis services, a task and finish group has been set up to develop the service specification for specialist endometriosis care in Wales.

HEIW will continue to develop endometriosis education modules, to include specialist level modules. Participation in the modules will be monitored, and consideration will be given to what, if any, additional actions are needed to increase uptake.
