How is the Welsh Government addressing the skills gap within the nuclear energy sector?
The Welsh Government is taking a co-ordinated, evidence led and regionally targeted approach to addressing skills needs linked to developments in the nuclear sector. On 22 January 2026 the Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership convened the North Wales Skills Summit on Ynys Môn which brought together industry leaders, FE and HE providers, local authorities and the NW Regional Skills Partnership, with three Welsh Government Ministers in attendance, to examine how the region can capitalise on major strategic projects, including developments at Wylfa.
The Skills Summit was part of our ongoing engagement with partners which, alongside collaboration with UK wide initiatives such as the National Nuclear Skills Plan, are helping us to understand nuclear workforce requirements and plan future skills provision accordingly.
On 23 February 2026, the Minister for Skills, Culture and Social Partnership and I met Bangor University and its Nuclear Future Institute to discuss how the University could contribute to the wider skills agenda in the nuclear sector and the opportunities for it to grow its existing provision.
