Has the Welsh Government assessed whether funding allocated to Welsh medium and bilingual apprenticeships is sufficient to meet demand from learners and employers?
Evidence provided by Medr confirms that funding for Welsh‑medium and bilingual apprenticeships has remained broadly stable in recent years. As part of developing the new apprenticeship programme due to commence in April 2027, Medr has undertaken a formal consultation, which considered the Welsh language in full, including how apprenticeship opportunities can be better promoted and how bilingual uptake can be increased across Wales and sectors. The consultation findings, due for publication in the week of 16 February, will inform the design of the new programme.
This programme development work will include reviewing whether current funding levels are sufficient to meet demand from learners and employers, ensuring that future provision supports the continued expansion of Welsh‑medium and bilingual apprenticeship opportunities.
Apprenticeships will also form part of the National Plan for the Welsh Language, recognising their importance as a key pathway into Welsh‑medium vocational and technical provision. As this work progresses, Medr will engage with apprenticeship providers to understand their contribution and how Medr can support increased Welsh‑medium provision and assessment, in line with its wider strategic commitments.
