Further to WQ98060, will the Cabinet Secretary be instructing her officials to look at case studies about students wearing PE kit to school on PE days to avoid shared changing facilities, as was trialled in the trauma-informed policies of Belvedere Academy in England with statistically improved outcomes?
School uniform policy and the use of changing rooms is a matter for schools themselves. We have published statutory guidance which provides useful advice on developing school uniform policy. Our guidance states that governing bodies should adopt a sensitive, flexible approach that has regard to the equality issues outlined in the guidance. The Welsh Government is supportive of any inclusive practice which ensures that all children and young people feel valued, safe and able to learn.
A review of our safeguarding arrangements is underway and due to report in March. Phase two of that review will include a detailed look at safeguarding in education arrangements. It will focus on the effectiveness and consistency of school and local authority safeguarding policies and procedures, and alignment with national guidance. It will also evaluate the safeguarding culture and leadership within educational institutions.
I have asked officials to ensure that consideration is given to this issue as part of that work.
