What steps is the Welsh Government taking to improve the quality of life for people with asthma in South Wales East?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 04/02/2026

The Welsh Government’s expectations for NHS services for people with asthma are set out in the Quality Statement for Respiratory Disease.

The Welsh Government has established a national respiratory network in NHS Performance and Improvement to work with health boards to improve respiratory care, including for asthma. This involves improving the consistency of asthma care in accordance with nationally-agreed prescribing guidance and education for general healthcare professionals about the management of asthma. It includes provision of patient support apps to aid better self-management and the establishment of expert services to manage difficult asthma.

The Welsh Government co-funds a national clinical audit which measures the quality of asthma care to support NHS organisations to deliver cycles of quality improvement in the services they provide.
