Does NHS Wales require or allow midwives or nurses to log the gender identity of newborns?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 04/02/2026

All babies undergo an initial newborn examination during which sex is recorded as male or female.

In cases where sex cannot be determined from external anatomical features, the baby is recorded as having indeterminate sex and referred to a neonatologist for specialist assessment.

The examination is carried out in accordance with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence postnatal care guidance.
