What targeted funding and support is available to schools placed in special measures, and how does the Welsh Government assess whether this funding is sufficient to support sustained improvement?
Local authorities have statutory responsibility for monitoring and supporting their schools and intervening where appropriate. Local authorities are best placed to judge the needs and circumstances of their schools and to determine how any additional funding, if required, should be deployed for a school in special measures to secure sustainable improvement.
When a school is placed in special measures, there is a clear, independent and rigorous process to follow:
- the school must set out in an action plan how it will address the recommendations from the Estyn inspection;
- the local authority must outline the support it will provide to the school;
- Estyn will monitor the progress of the school.
