What provision is currently in place to ensure the public has access to clear, accessible and free independent planning advice in Wales, and has the Welsh Government considered whether additional support beyond Planning Aid Wales is required?

Clear understanding and engagement in the wider planning process is vital to how the public can meaningfully respond to developments which are likely to affect them.

On 15 December a new infrastructure consenting process came into force which introduces a unified, streamlined process for significant infrastructure projects in Wales. The process puts public participation at the heart of the decision-making process by offering multiple points of consultation and engagement with local communities from early in the process, placing clearly defined publicity and notification requirements on developers and providing opportunities for community involvement through open-floor hearings.

The new consenting process is supported by a package of guidance which has been published on the Welsh Government website, including guidance on how communities can participate in the infrastructure consenting process.

Planning Aid Wales offers an important resource to the wider public by supporting meaningful community engagement on planning matters in Wales. They offer free impartial advice on all aspects of planning, from small scale developments to significant infrastructure projects.

To ensure Planning Aid Wales continues their important service effectively and to provide additional assistance, guidance and training for the public on the new consenting process, I have recently increased their funding by £25,000 this year.
