How is the Welsh Government working with farmers to facilitate access to grants for tree planting as a nature-based solution to climate change and flooding?

Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 22/01/2026

We offer a range of grants and other support to farmers to incentivise tree planting which in turn help with climate change mitigation and adaptation, and slow water runoff. Under the Sustainable Farming Scheme all entrants will be required to consider how trees can benefit their farm including for mitigating climate change impacts. They will then plot these on a Tree and Hedgerow Planting Opportunity Plan. There will be funding available both for woodland creation and management as well as advice and guidance

Last year we established the Trees and Hedges Stakeholder Delivery Group. We continue to work with the Group to help us improve understanding of the multiple benefits of trees for the farm and the environment and make it easier for farmers and other landowners to access our tree planting grants.
