What steps is the Cabinet Secretary taking to encourage more people in Wales to enter the dentistry profession?
The Welsh Government is taking clear and proactive steps to encourage more people to train as dentists in Wales. Through our Train, Work, Live campaign, we promote Wales as a place to access high-quality training and build a rewarding career.
We offer financial incentives for Dental Foundation Training in rural areas, including a £7,000 living grant, exam fee support, and wellbeing resources. These measures have already delivered excellent results, with many trainees choosing to remain in Wales after completing their foundation year.
Beyond financial support, we provide flexible training options, opportunities for career progression through leadership fellowships, and continuing professional development – all underpinned by high-quality education and mentoring. Cardiff University School of Dentistry is currently ranked fifth in the UK and remains in the top 50 in the world (ranked 34).
We are also committed to widening access and inspiring the next generation. Working with Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and Y Gymdeithas Ddeintyddol Gymraeg, we have delivered workshops and activities in schools to showcase dentistry as a career option for Welsh-speaking students. We continue to support the Deintyddion Yfory scheme and the North Wales Dentistry Widening Participation Scheme.
Looking ahead, our Dental Strategic Workforce Plan, developed by Health Education Improvement Wales (HEIW) sets out a clear vision for recruitment, retention, wellbeing, and innovation.
