How is the Welsh Government working with the UK Government and local authorities to restrict the sale of counterfeit goods?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning | Answered on 04/11/2025

Whilst policing is a reserved matter, the Welsh Government works closely with Police and Crime Commissioners and Police Forces across Wales to address all crime reduction issues in Wales.  We also work with our social partners in the retail sector to share knowledge and best practice in tackling retail crime, especially in these weeks leading up to the busy Christmas period.

The selling of counterfeit goods is not a victimless crime, and it is important consumers have all necessary safeguards in place so they can have confidence in the goods they buy. Consumers need to be aware that they have the legal right to a refund if they have bought something that is fake or counterfeit. Our partners in Local Authorities and Trading Standards are on hand to advise consumers on the appropriate steps to take.

If customers need more help finding out how to get their money back, they can also contact the Citizens Advice consumer service.

Business Wales can also provide entrepreneurs and businesses with a wide range of information, advice and guidance - this includes counterfeit goods.
