What plans does the Welsh Government have to collect data about people who receive care in corridors in hospitals?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 24/10/2025

The Welsh Government does not endorse the routine delivery of care in non-clinical or unsuitable environments. It is recognised that improved reporting, investigation and action on such incidents are essential to support system-wide learning and improvement.

To improve the flow through the health and care system and ensure people are able to leave hospital when clinically ready, the Welsh Government, NHS and local government have collectively been focused on reducing pathways of care delays over the last 12 months. Data is published every month.

To support delivery of optimal hospital flow and a maximum 45-minute ambulance patient handover time across Wales, further consideration is being given to our national escalation processes and strengthening accountability through the national daily system call. This includes consideration of the information reported by health boards daily, which informs operational escalation decisions, such as when care is being provided in non-clinical or unsuitable environments to balance wider system risks.
