What consideration has the Welsh Government given to requiring all supermarkets in Wales to have doors on their fridges?

Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 13/05/2025

The Welsh Government has been exploring various measures to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions within the Food and Drink retail sector. One such measure is the recommended installation of doors on refrigerators in supermarkets. We continue to work closely with the Retail Forum and key stakeholders to raise the awareness and facilitate changes across the sector. This collaborative approach ensures that the retail sector remains proactive in reducing its energy consumption and carbon footprint.

In November 2024, the Welsh Government published the Climate Adaptation Toolkit for Independent Retailers, which includes a recommendation for adding doors to fridges in stores. Closed refrigerators help maintain consistent temperatures, extend the shelf life of perishable products, reduce food spoilage and waste, lower energy usage, and reduce CO2 emissions.
