What consideration has the Cabinet Secretary given to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease 2025 annual report on Global Strategy for the Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 07/05/2025

The Welsh Government’s approach to improving clinical services for conditions such as COPD was set out in the National Clinical Framework and resulted in the introduction of the Quality Statement for Respiratory Disease:

Quality statement for respiratory disease | GOV.WALES

This sets out the Welsh Government’s expectations for the NHS in Wales regarding planning services for people affected by non-communicable respiratory conditions, including COPD.

As a result, the Welsh Government expects the NHS in Wales to apply clinical standards and guidelines on the diagnosis and management of COPD issued by the All-Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). AWMSG and NICE take an evidence-based approach to guidelines and technology appraisals. Stakeholders can inform the development of these guidelines by contact these organisations.
