What measures are the Welsh Government and partners taking to develop a data-driven, multi-method approach to coal tip safety?

Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 24/04/2025

Welsh Government has developed the National Disused Coal Tips Dataset to form a consistent national picture of the location and status of disused coal tips in Wales. This is a dynamic dataset which is updated on a rolling basis in collaboration with our delivery partners, using multiple methods. These include site-level observations from the ongoing inspection regime as well as LiDAR technology, satellite imagery and GIS analysis.

We are also undertaking a programme of technology trials on more than 70 category C and D tips in conjunction with our public partners. This will future-proof the existing inspection and maintenance regime by ensuring it keeps pace with technological developments.
