What guidance has the Welsh Government issued to local authorities regarding garden bonfires?
Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 31/03/2025
The Welsh Government position is to ensure that the public has information available to make appropriate choices to meet their needs and the needs of their environment, which includes decision making around the act of burning such as bonfires, or removal of waste via alternative routes such as garden waste collections or civic amenity sites.
The legal responsibility for investigating statutory nuisance, which includes smoke from domestic burning, resides with the relevant Local Authority.
