What assessment has the Cabinet Secretary made of the impact on the Welsh workforce and economy of Cardiff University’s plan to cut the number of maths teaching staff as it merges its School of Mathematics and School of Computer Science?

Cardiff University is currently consulting on proposals to change its operating models and structure. I recognise that our universities, and their workforce are a key component of our commitment to drive economic growth through supporting and growing research and innovation for our businesses and industry. I expect all institutions to work in social partnership with trade unions, staff and students and to explore options fully.

I have asked Medr to undertake an overview of subject demand, provision, and distribution in HE in Wales, and to consider where interventions might be required to ensure the continuation of strategically important subject areas in Wales.  The outcome of its work will contribute to any impact assessment which might eventually be necessary.
