Will the Welsh Government be removing certain functional skills requirements for adult apprentices in Wales replicating the UK Government's recent decision in England?

Answered by Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership | Answered on 25/02/2025

We currently have no plans to adopt the changes announced by the UK government. However, following a consultation undertaken in 2024 we will shortly be modifying the Specification of Apprenticeship Standards for Wales (SASW).

Medr is now responsible for delivering the apprenticeship programme in Wales. The Welsh Government is working closely with Medr to maximise opportunities for the people of Wales. Medr is focusing on shaping the future of apprenticeship provision in Wales post-2027. This goal will be achieved by working with partners and stakeholders to ensure that the new provisions meet the needs of learners, employers, and the economy in a rapidly changing world. Medr is also undertaking work to develop existing programmes, including reviewing apprenticeship frameworks.
