How is the Welsh Government providing support for music in higher education?

Answered by Minister for Further and Higher Education | Answered on 11/02/2025

Welsh Government grant funding for the higher education sector in Wales is allocated to institutions by Medr. Most of this funding is not linked to a particular provision, so it is for institutions to decide how they use it to support their priorities.

Most of the music provision in Wales does not receive any specific funding. An exception to this is the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where Medr recognise the additional costs of specialist conservatoire provision. This ensures that funding levels for this specialist provision are comparable to those in England.

I have asked Medr to begin an overview of subject demand, provision, and distribution in higher education in Wales, and to consider where interventions might be required to ensure the continuation of strategically important subject areas in Wales.
