What assessment has the Welsh Government made of the potential economic impact of the cessation of all undergraduate courses at the Lampeter campus of University of Wales Trinity Saint David on the local, regional, and national economy?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning | Answered on 21/01/2025

I understand that the proposal by the University of Wales Trinity St David (UWTSD) to move all its undergraduate provision from its Lampeter campus to its Carmarthen campus may cause some concern for those affected. However, as an autonomous institution, the UWTSD is responsible for its own academic affairs, including the strategic management of its estate. Therefore, it would not be appropriate for the Welsh Government to intervene. The decision on location of course delivery, or the closure of any campus or facilities, is one to be made by the UWTSD.

I acknowledge that the University has been at Lampeter for more than 200 years, having been founded in 1822, and has played an important role in the economic, cultural, social, and educational fabric of the town for many years.

As a Government, we remain committed to help secure economic prosperity for all parts of Wales and will continue to work with local government partners and others to help realise our ambitions of a more prosperous and greener Wales.
