What assessment has the Cabinet Secretary made of how the proposal from University of Wales Trinity Saint David to move the humanities department from Lampeter will impact on Welsh tradition, culture, and academic excellence, and on the local economy and well-being of the town and community of Lampeter?

I recognise that the University has been at Lampeter for more than 200 years, having been founded in 1822, and has played an important role in the economic, cultural, social and educational fabric of the town for many years. I understand that this announcement may have caused concern for those affected by the proposals.

However, as an autonomous institution, the University is responsible for its own academic affairs, including the strategic management of its estate. Therefore, it would not be appropriate for Welsh Ministers to intervene. The decision to close any campus or facilities is one to be made by the University.
