Further to WQ95069, will the Cabinet Secretary clarify what measures the Welsh Government has in place to ensure that every state school in Wales adheres to the statutory guidance forming part of the Curriculum for Wales?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 09/12/2024

The Curriculum for Wales framework guidance includes a specific section which sets out the legal requirements. We have also published a specific resource for schools to support them to understand and meet these requirements.

Schools and settings must have regard to statutory guidance and must follow the mandatory elements of the Curriculum for Wales framework. The Welsh Government has regular discussions with Local Authorities, Estyn, and a range of other stakeholders, to understand how schools are putting curriculum requirements in practice, to understand implementation nationally and inform policymaking and support for schools.

Estyn consider schools’ curricula as part of inspection arrangements. This includes ensuring schools design and deliver a curriculum that provides pupils with a suitable breadth and depth of learning across all areas of learning and experience.

The formative evaluation of the Curriculum for Wales will also provide information on how schools are implementing curriculum requirements in practice.
