Will the Cabinet Secretary provide an update on what steps they are taking to encourage more women and girls to take up and compete in golf?

Answered by Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership | Answered on 05/12/2024

The Welsh Government is supportive of all women and girls that wish to take up any sport, including golf. Our funding to Sport Wales is supporting a range of initiatives aimed at increasing participation, including girls-only sessions through the Junior New2Golf schemes, mixed hubs in the performance pathway which will allow girls to play together more often and enable junior players to play alongside seniors, and a focus on club governance to ensure inclusive practices are mainstreamed within clubs.

The AIG Women’s Open being held at Royal Porthcawl next year will increase the visibility of golf, encouraging more women and girls in Wales to start playing the sport, and even igniting a desire to compete at a high level.
