How is the Welsh Government monitoring which schools are undertaking lifesaving skills and first aid under the nation's new curriculum?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 25/11/2024

Within the Curriculum for Wales, the teaching of lifesaving skills and first aid forms part of the statutory guidance within the Health and Well-being Area, as part of considering the importance of safety and the health of others.

Given the importance of first aid and lifesaving skills, we continue to work closely with a range of key stakeholders and partners to support the implementation of the Curriculum for Wales, ensuring that schools have a range of professional learning and resources to support them.

A multi-year formative evaluation of the Curriculum for Wales is underway, led by Arad research and partners from across higher education. This involves engagement with schools and settings across Wales, including to understand how the Health and Well-being Area is being implemented in practice. The evaluation report on Health and Well-being will be published in the summer term in 2025.

In addition to independent evaluation, Estyn inspectors evaluate how well schools design and deliver a curriculum that provides pupils with a suitable breadth and depth of learning, including within the Health and Well-being Area.
