Further to WQ93032, how much additional housing will be required in each new local development plan or in each plan due to be updated over the duration of those plans, and what is the Government's latest assessment of population growth in the areas to which those plans relate during the periods covered?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning | Answered on 15/11/2024

Local planning authorities are responsible for assessing their own requirements for additional housing based on local evidence; of which a Local Housing Market Assessment (LHMA) is vital part. LHMAs are carried out using  a standardised and on-line tool which assesses both ‘newly arising need’ and ‘existing unmet need’.

LHMAs also include an assessment of population change in their area informed by the Government’s latest household projections.. Planning Policy Wales requires that Local Development Plans include targets for the number of affordable and market homes an authority aims to deliver over the plan period based on the output of the LHMA and other evidence.
