What role does the Welsh Government envisage new towns will play in its policy for planning and providing additional housing in light of the policy being promoted by the UK Government for England?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning | Answered on 15/11/2024

Planning Policy Wales supports the promotion of new towns through Future Wales and Strategic Development Plans. Currently, the scale of housing growth proposed by individual Local Development Plans is unlikely to justify a new town. New towns need to consist of at least 10,000 homes with associated social and economic infrastructure to be sustainable and minimise the need to travel. For this reason, new town proposals are more likely to be justified and promoted through Strategic Development Plans and reflect the housing needs of the region.
