Will the Cabinet Secretary publish the terms of reference of the thematic review and the research on classroom behaviour she mentioned in her recent letter to the schools social partnership forum?
The thematic review into promoting positive behaviour in secondary schools is being led by Estyn. The aim is for this to be published in March 2025. The terms of reference are owned by Estyn; therefore, I will not be publishing them. As a summary, the thematic review is expected to support the Welsh Government by achieving the following objectives:
- To provide an overview of the current position relating to behaviour across secondary schools in Wales.
- To identify how schools deal with challenging behaviour in secondary schools.
- To identify how schools promote positive behaviour in secondary schools.
- To highlight effective practice throughout (including spotlights, effective practice case studies and resources)
This thematic will focus on promoting positive behaviour in secondary schools (11-16) It will involve pupils in Years 7 to 11 inclusively.
The research into disruptive classroom behaviour is being led by Bangor University and the aim is for this to be published in January 2025. Whilst there are no terms of reference to publish, this research aims to develop recommendations to inform practice and policy on building positive classroom management approaches for reducing disruptive and challenging behaviour. Key objectives include the summarising of existing research evidence for best practice in classroom management and the collection of evidence and examples of best practice from within Welsh schools.
