What is the Welsh Government's position on the increase in private kidney dialysis services across Wales?
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 12/11/2024
I expect the NHS to provide kidney dialysis to residents in Wales who require it. Approximately 6% of the Welsh population is affected by chronic kidney disease and we expect to see around 4% to 5% growth in demand annually for dialysis treatment.
The NHS is expanding dialysis provision across Wales, including at dialysis units in Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypool, Cardiff, Welshpool, and Swansea, as well as satellite units in Carmarthen and Aberystwyth. In addition, new dialysis units are due to open in Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
