What steps is the Cabinet Secretary taking to ensure that schools have individual health plans in place for every pupil with epilepsy?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 22/10/2024

The Welsh Government’s Supporting Learners with Healthcare Needs advice and statutory guidance for schools and other bodies set out how to support learners with their healthcare needs and ensure minimal disruption or barriers to their education.

Under the guidance, all pupils in mainstream schools in Wales with conditions such as epilepsy should have an individual healthcare plan, setting out the support they need.

My officials have recently been engaging with the sector to raise awareness of the guidance and to understand how it may be strengthened ahead of a planned review next year.

I have also recently written to Young Eplilepsy, thanking them for their work in raising awareness as part of their Understating My Epilepsy campaign, and agreeing to consider their petition as we look to strengthen the guidance for supporting pupils with healthcare needs.
