Will the Welsh Government explain why Denbighshire County Council receives around £200 per head more than Conwy County Borough Council?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government | Answered on 22/10/2024

The Government is committed to continuing to use and maintain a fair and transparent funding formula for local authorities across Wales, which is agreed with local government. Funding is distributed on the basis of a formula containing indicators of need, with the main factors being population, deprivation and sparsity.

The 2024-25 settlement saw a decrease in the total population share in Conwy. Conversely Denbighshire saw an increase in its population share. The proportion of nursery and primary school pupils has also fallen by more in Conwy than Denbighshire. In addition, there was a transfer of more than £5million through the Coastal Risk Management Programme into the settlement for Denbighshire, thus increasing the £ per capita by £51.
