What discussions has the Cabinet Secretary had with Natural Resources Wales on proposals to build a flood defence scheme in Skenfrith?

Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 03/10/2024

I regularly engage with Cabinet colleagues and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) on a range issues concerning flooding. The Welsh Government provides funding to Risk Management Authorities (RMAs) such as NRW and local authorities to manage the risk of flooding in Wales. NRW are the RMA responsible for developing a scheme at Skenfrith.

I can confirm that NRW have appointed a Project Manager to manage the delivery of a Strategic Outline Case (SOC). The SOC is the first stage of an appraisal which will consider various options to reduce the risk of flooding at Skenfrith. NRW have also commissioned consultants who will provide technical expertise in developing the scheme.
