What is the Welsh Government doing to protect seals, particularly during pupping season?
Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 01/10/2024
Seals are already afforded some protection through the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 and the Conservation of Seals Act 1970 which makes it a criminal offence in England, Wales and Scotland to intentionally or recklessly kill, injure or take a seal.
Welsh Government has also awarded funding to update the Wild Seas Wales website and develop the Wales Coast Explorer App. These provide visitors to our coastline useful information and guidance when around sensitive species such as seals.
