What guidance does the Welsh Government provide to schools regarding children impacted by alopecia?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 30/09/2024

It is important our schools ensure the emotional wellbeing of pupils who are impacted by physical conditions.  Our Whole School Approach to Emotional and Mental Wellbeing requires all schools to consider the wellbeing needs of pupils and the wider school community.  We are supporting this with £13.6m of funding in the current year (2024-25).

Schools should also ensure uniform policies are inclusive and do not restrict the participation of any child or young person in learning.

School policies or rules related to hair/hairstyles should not indirectly discriminate against pupils with protected characteristics such as disability. If a school policy bans certain hairstyles or head coverings this could indirectly discriminate against pupils with health conditions which may include alopecia (for example, the wearing of wigs, scarves or hats).

Our School Uniform and appearance: policy guidance for governing bodies provides relevant information and advice. Schools need to ensure that school uniform and appearance policies do not disadvantage disabled pupils in comparison to pupils who are not disabled. Issues for consideration include the practicality of policies and whether reasonable adjustments can be made to accommodate disabled pupils’ requirements.
