What impact will the UK Government's Pet Abduction Act 2024 have on Wales, and what consideration has the Government given to introduce a similar bill in Wales?
Answered by Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 16/09/2024
The theft of a pet is distressing and is already a criminal offence under the Theft Act 1968 with a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment. After careful consideration the decision was made to prioritise legislative resources on our ambitious plans for animal welfare in Wales.
While Wales is not included in the Pet Abduction Act 2024 work is ongoing with the other UK governments on improvements to domestic animal welfare such as the Microchipping platform, making it easier to reunite pets with their owners.
