How is the Cabinet Secretary planning to use the Wales's Mine Water Heat Opportunity Map to facilitate and inform future development decisions to reach net zero targets?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Transport and North Wales | Answered on 09/09/2024

The Mine Water Heat Opportunity maps have been published to inform local authorities and developers who wish to explore the opportunities for mine heat in Wales. The maps provide important information that will guide potential developers to sites with most potential and inform feasibility studies to investigate the viability of heat networks using the mine water heat.

The maps are designed to complement Local Area Energy Plans, which set out the action needed across all local authorities in Wales to achieve our net zero targets. We support local authorities and communities in delivering these plans through the Welsh Government Energy Service and by funding regional energy delivery teams.

We are encouraging regions to work with local authorities to identify key priorities for future energy developments and we will continue to support their delivery.
