What information does Welsh Government hold about the number of people receiving the Iaith Athrawon Yfory Welsh Medium Initial Teacher Education Incentive that a) have applied, b) have stayed in the teaching profession in Wales, and c) are teaching Welsh or through the medium of Welsh since the start of the scheme in 2018?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 19/08/2024

Since the beginning of the Iaith Athrawon Yfory incentive scheme 540 (rounded to the nearest 5) eligible persons have claimed the first incentive payment on award of QTS. As of 8th August 315 eligible teachers (rounded to the nearest 5) have claimed the second payment on completion of induction. To be eligible for the second payment induction must be completed in a secondary maintained setting, teaching through the medium of Welsh or Welsh as a subject.

My officials are currently agreeing a data sharing agreement with the Education Workforce Council to analyse teachers that received a Priority Subject Incentive and determine retention rates. Should this piece of work be successful my officials will explore conducting a similar analysis on the Iaith Athrawon Yfory incentive, analysing retention rates beyond the completion of induction. However, at present only one academic year cohort’s (2018/19) scheme has closed for claimants and can therefore be considered finalised in terms of data; to ensure robust findings more than one set of finalised data must be utilised.
