How is the Welsh Government supporting asylum seeker pupils with poor English ability to progress through school at the correct level?
The Curriculum for Wales has been developed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners so that every learner, regardless of need and background, is enabled to progress to reach their full potential. The Languages, Literacy and Communication Area of learning and experience, supports learning across the whole curriculum and includes support for practitioners when considering progression of learners with English as an additional language.
The Welsh Government, via the Local Authority Education Grant, provides over £160m in funding to local authorities to support equity in education provision, with £11m of that directed towards support for black, Asian and minority ethnic (including asylum seekers and refugees) and gypsy roma traveller learners. This funding supports learners who experience barriers to learning, the curriculum and education such as linguistic or language, cultural, and/or systemic and institutional barriers.
