What plans does the Welsh Government have to offset teacher redundancies and address the current shortage of teachers in Wales?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 09/07/2024

Although responsibility for the employment of teachers lies with local authorities and governing bodies and Welsh Ministers are not able to intervene, we do monitor the situation closely and work with schools to minimise the impact on learners.

We continue to hold regular meetings with Local Authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that sufficient, suitable staff are employed or engaged to work at the school, to provide education appropriate for the ages, aptitudes, abilities and needs of the pupils.

The recruitment of Secondary teachers in some subjects continues to be challenging. This is a global issue and is not specific to Wales.  We are working with partners to increase recruitment into Initial Teacher Education, targeted to these subjects.
