What extra resources is the Welsh Government providing to ensure that police in Wales can combat increased cases of domestic abuse during the Euros?

Unfortunately, we know that some cases of existing domestic abuse can be exacerbated by the emotions, stresses and consumption of alcohol or drugs that can surround large sporting events.

Policing is reserved to the UK Government, including from a funding perspective, and forces have operational independence over how they allocate their resources in response to local needs. Although we work closely with policing partners on a variety of issues, including on Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence, it is for the UK Government to ensure forces are effectively funded to meet the needs of the communities they serve.

However, the Live Fear Free helpline, funded by Welsh Government and delivered by Welsh Women’s Aid, is available for anyone suffering domestic abuse or for anyone to get in touch with concerns about someone’s behaviour towards their partner.

During high profile sporting events the helpline continues to accept calls, instant messages, texts and emails 24 hours a day and in many languages. Call 0808 80 10 800 or visit Contact Live Fear Free | GOV.WALES

After an initial assessment people can then be put in touch with their local Welsh Government funded domestic abuse specialist service or refuge. If there is a chance of immediate danger or harm, you should always dial 999 and contact the police for urgent assistance.
