Data Supplied by Cardiff School of Dentistry at Cardiff University
1 The annual intake target is 74 students per year, though numbers alter slightly due to students failing and/or repeating years, or those who take a study break or if any students choose to leave the programme.
2 This larger number reflects the high failure rate in the pandemic entry years, this cohort struggled to adjust to the exam environment, meaning a larger than normal number of students re-sit the year.
3The 2024 entry cycle is still open; final numbers cannot be confirmed until October 2024 when enrolment is complete.
I met colleagues from Cardiff University and the School of Dentistry earlier this year, to raise my concerns about the number of Welsh-domiciled students who were successful in gaining dentistry places. The School has agreed to work to improve these figures over the next few years with the intention of achieving 40% of Welsh-domiciled students over time. I was also pleased to hear about the ongoing work in various outreach programmes and initiatives across schools in Wales, such as the Deintyddion Yfory scheme.
