When will the Welsh Government establish a permanent body to oversee compliance with environmental law?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 19/06/2024

In our Programme for Government, we committed to working towards the establishment of an environmental governance body for Wales, as well as a statutory duty and targets to protect and restore biodiversity.

A White paper consultation was undertaken at the start of the year to bring forward a Bill to establish an environmental governance body for Wales, embed environmental principles into Welsh law, and to introduce a statutory duty and targets to protect and restore biodiversity during this Senedd term. Once the Bill has achieved Royal Assent the implementation of the environmental governance body for Wales will commence.
