What assessment has the Cabinet Secretary made of the impact of sending suckler cows to slaughter because of bovine TB on the the calves left on the holding to be fed on powdered milk or dry food?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 18/06/2024

The welfare of calves left on farm, when their dams are removed for TB control purposes, remains the responsibility of the keeper.

Our code of practice for the welfare of cattle includes guidance on calf rearing. The code encourages all those who are responsible for these animals to adopt the highest standards of husbandry and explains what a person needs to do to meet the standards of care the law requires.
