What is the Cabinet Secretary’s response to students in the poorest areas in Cardiff being denied places in Welsh-medium schools in their catchment area, with the next available school up to 90 minutes away by bus?

Welsh-medium education is for all regardless of where in Wales you live. I don’t want any learner denied that opportunity.

Local authorities, through their WESPs, are expected to monitor fluctuations in pupil numbers so that expansion of Welsh-medium education are planned in areas where the current and future demand is at its greatest.

Where a place is refused, parents have the right of appeal. As part of its deliberations the panel will consider whether the admission authority has acted correctly in applying its admission arrangements when reaching its decision. The Welsh Government is unable to intervene in individual admissions decisions which are the responsibility of admission authorities.
